Synopsis

She escaped the past. But the past found her anyway.

Mona Vickers has one goal: give her four daughters a safe, loving home and build a future they deserve. Juggling a teaching degree, a job as a school aide, and the exhausting logistics of city life with no car and no family nearby, she keeps her head down and her guard up. Her twin brother is in federal prison for human trafficking. His wife is not far behind. The girls don’t know the truth, and Mona intends to protect them from it for as long as she possibly can.

When she enrolls her daughters in the afterschool program at the Unity Plenkiss Community Center, she does not plan to stay. She certainly does not plan to find herself volunteering in the kitchen alongside Roy Strough, a broad-shouldered, Bible-quoting, thoroughly decent man who grew up on the mission field in the Congo and thinks nothing of quoting Scripture in the middle of a conversation about peanut butter sandwiches.

Mona has spent years being strong on her own. Roy makes her wonder what it would feel like to stop.

As she begins teaching internet safety classes to at-risk teenage girls, Mona draws on painful personal knowledge to warn them about the online predators and trafficking networks that destroyed her family. She teaches the girls to recognize the warning signs. What she does not expect is that God will use those same hard lessons to do something quiet and irreversible in her own heart.

But when a mysterious stranger begins circling her life, and someone attempts to take the girls, the fragile peace she has built begins to crack. The shadows she thought she had outrun are growing longer, and this time, she cannot face them alone.

Long Shadows is a rich, emotionally layered Christian romantic suspense novel set in a fictional Chicago neighborhood, following one woman’s journey from guarded survivor to beloved daughter of God, and the unexpected community that helps her get there.

Perfect for readers who love:
– Christian romantic suspense with authentic faith journeys
– Strong female protagonists with complicated backstories
– Slow-burn romance with real emotional depth
– Stories about found family, redemption, and forgiveness
– Inner-city ministry settings and community-centered stories
– Books that balance suspense, humor, and heartfelt moments
