Terry Deitz is attracted to Debbie Douglas on his first day of high school. Some kids wonder why she always wears blue jeans but never a dress. Terry and Debbie start dating during their junior year when he takes her to the Homecoming dance. He discovers her main goal in life is to get married as soon as she graduates from high school. Terry wants to go to college and isn’t willing to commit to marrying right after high school, so Debbie breaks up with him before their senior year. He reaches out to her a few times and is rebuffed each time. She receives an engagement ring from someone else for Christmas and is married in June after graduation. Terry goes to college and graduates in three years. He meets Debbie by chance one day when she walks into the real estate office where he works. He reluctantly helps her and discovers she is divorced. He then discovers that her father beat her as a child, and that her husband has beaten her and committed adultery. When he threatens to beat their three-year-old daughter, she walks nearly twenty miles in the night to get away and protect her child. Eventually, they renew their relationship and marry.
