The happiest day in Esther Bloch’s life also turned out to be the worst. Having survived the liquidation of her neighborhood, Esther finds herself hiding in the basement of an old church, pregnant and terrified. Her life consists of devouring whatever books the kind priest brings her, and a few conversations with some of the downed flyers and others in hiding in the same room. Then, along comes Dalton Codey, an American pilot still recovering from his injuries. Everything changes when Dalton arrives.
Dalton Codey is one of only two members of his crew that were shot down over France that survived the crash. When the opportunity arises for him to escape the filthy prison hospital he is first interred at, Dalton jumps at it. Traveling with two elderly ladies he first heads through Paris, then back to the basement of an ancient church. There he meets Esther, and several men also in hiding. A medical emergency and betrayal by one of their own makes it impossible for Dalton or Esther to stay in hiding and so they must make the arduous and dangerous journey out of France on foot.
Meeting both friends and enemies along the way Dalton and Esther travel toward freedom. Will they make it? Does love prevail, or will hate stop this relationship and their lives before they’ve even truly begun?
