Trigger Warnings

I think it’s important to note that my books are not rom-coms. They aren’t light beach reads. They have organic humor in them, they are full of hope, but they are grittier stories. I don’t show triggers on the page, but the emotion behind the events are on the page. Below is a pretty detailed overview. It may be too much information, but I thought I would include everything for you to decide what is important for your readers. The below information is for books 1, 2, and 3 of the Shelter & Sky series. Please let me know if you have any questions.

*Self-harm, suicide, or suicidal thoughts – Nothing on the page in regards to suicide, but in Even After This (BOOK 1 of the Shelter & Sky series) the heroine mentions once that four years prior during her toughest time of grief, she stopped eating and it was a suicide attempt she didn’t understand
*Sexual violence (rape, sexual assault, etc.)
*Stalking or harassment – In After We Fall (BOOK 2 in the Shelter & Sky series), in one scene, the heroine is harassed and struck down. She’s also under gunpoint at one point.
*Abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional) In After We Fall (BOOK 2 in the Shelter & Sky series), a minor character is physically abused. It’s not seen on the page, but she shows up afterwards to get some help.
*Graphic medical descriptions or bodily fluids (esp. blood, vomit, or birth described on page) In After We Fall (BOOK 2 in the Shelter & Sky series), the heroine is struck down (on the page) and has a head injury. Blood is described briefly. Her bruised face is described briefly in the following chapter.
*Death of/harm to a child – Nothing on the page, however, in Even After This (BOOK 1 of the Shelter & Sky series), four years prior to the book opening chapter, the heroine loses her two young children. Later in the book, the hero’s daughter takes a fall and is in the hospital, but the reader does not see the fall, only hears about it afterwards and sees her in the hospital on the page.
*Pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage or abortion – Not on the page: Even After This (BOOK 1 in the Shelter & Sky series) experienced infertility and miscarriages years before the book opens. However, this is discussed on the page in the book inside of the romantic relationship. Pregnancy with her will be something we see on the page in both After We Fall (BOOK 2 of the Shelter & Sky series) and BOOK 3 of the Shelter & Sky series. Revealing her pregnancy would be a huge spoiler. In BOOK 3 of the Shelter & Sky series, Not on the Page, the heroine gave up a baby for adoption when she was a teenager. However, this loss is discussed later in the book.

Level 1

  • Holding hands/Affectionate touching
  • Compliments/confessing love
  • Low-description kissing
  • Tender embraces/cuddling
  • Blushing and sighing
  • Non-descriptive discussions of sex
  • Established relationships
  • Fade to black if married
  • Any sexual encounters from past only referred to, not described or on-screen

Level 2

  • Touch that signals attraction
  • No touching in underwear zone
  • Long kisses, lightly descriptive
  • Deeper kisses, tongue implied not described
  • Feel warm/flushed
  • Gasping, deep sighs, light growls and groans
  • Thinking/speaking about desire non-descriptive
  • Fade to black for established relationships after a scene that matches this level – but may be unpopular if not married

Level 3

  • Hands moving, still not in underwear zone
  • French kiss with tongue described
  • Make-out sessions still follow guidelines
  • Feel hot, sweating
  • Heavier gasping, groaning, deep growls, panting
  • More frantic and lose some control
  • Male shirt may come off, but nothing else
  • Leg may straddle waist, but no mention of arousal
  • If they lay down together anywhere, use little description of contact/moving
  • May happen in a bedroom or on a bed, but should be interrupted or end with fade to black scene. Keep focus on the emotion.
  • Fade to black should still happen between married couples or at the end of the book between engaged/committed couples.
