Friends Don’t

By Leah Dobrinksa

I am typically not a lover of the entire Friends to Lovers trope…However! This book has totally changed my mind. Leah Dobrinska did this trope right and to absolute perfection! There wasn’t the typical pining after one another unknowingly that lasts forever. Instead they moved from strangers, to friends, to lovers seamlessly and perfectly.

This was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down and was such a breathe of fresh air to have a book that I loved and enjoyed every minute of! I am a total fan of grumpy brooding guys and Mack is just written so well! He is everything brooding with such a soft heart underneath all his hard layers. He is definitely one you want to be friends with and have in your corner.

Poppy is such a sweetheart and I love that after years of taking care of her family she finally has someone in her corner to take care of her. She is such the sunshine to Mack’s storm clouds and I love how they complete and compliment each other so well. And their nicknames…like the best nicknames for each other and totally one of my favorite things about this book too.

This book made me laugh out loud, swoon, and total feel all the warm feelings. Like truly this book is just the best and I’ll totally rave all about it. I’m already wanting book 2 asap and this one hasn’t even officially released yet. It is truly that great!

If you want a loose retelling of While You Were Sleeping, flirty banter, grump and sunshine, small town feels, and the perfect summer read totally add this one to your To Read list now…like really now!

Physical Intimacy: Lvl 2 (Kissing, Making out, some innuendo)
Mild Swearing: Just like 2-3 maybe?

Intimacy Levels

Level 1

  • Holding hands/Affectionate touching
  • Compliments/confessing love
  • Low-description kissing
  • Tender embraces/cuddling
  • Blushing and sighing
  • Non-descriptive discussions of sex
  • Established relationships
  • Fade to black if married
  • Any sexual encounters from past only referred to, not described or on-screen

Level 2

  • Touch that signals attraction
  • No touching in underwear zone
  • Long kisses, lightly descriptive
  • Deeper kisses, tongue implied not described
  • Feel warm/flushed
  • Gasping, deep sighs, light growls and groans
  • Thinking/speaking about desire non-descriptive
  • Fade to black for established relationships after a scene that matches this level – but may be unpopular if not married

Level 3

  • Hands moving, still not in underwear zone
  • French kiss with tongue described
  • Make-out sessions still follow guidelines
  • Feel hot, sweating
  • Heavier gasping, groaning, deep growls, panting
  • More frantic and lose some control
  • Male shirt may come off, but nothing else
  • Leg may straddle waist, but no mention of arousal
  • If they lay down together anywhere, use little description of contact/moving
  • May happen in a bedroom or on a bed, but should be interrupted or end with fade to black scene. Keep focus on the emotion.
  • Fade to black should still happen between married couples or at the end of the book between engaged/committed couples.
